Industrial Cooling System Upgrade in the Netherlands with Energy-Efficient Foras Vertical Turbine Pump VP22-400/1

Location: Arnhem, Netherland

Year: 2017

Application: Cooling plant

In the heart of the Netherlands, the industrial compound of “Kleefse Waard” in Arnhem has undergone a major green transformation. Once home to one of AkzoNobel's most significant chemical plants, the site is now being redeveloped into a modern, energy-efficient industrial hub. Global sustainability leader Veolia is spearheading the reconversion initiative with advanced technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact and energy use.

The Challenge

One of the core challenges was the outdated cooling water system, which consumed excessive energy and lacked efficiency. The existing infrastructure used three old vertical turbine pumps to draw water from the nearby natural channel to the cooling systems. These pumps, outdated in both technology and efficiency, were a bottleneck in Veolia’s vision for a greener future.

Our Solution: Foras VP22-400/1 Vertical Turbine Pump

Foras was chosen to deliver the first of three upgraded pumping units for this cooling system overhaul. The solution: the high-performance Foras VP22-400/1 Vertical Turbine Pump.

Key Characteristics:

  • Flow Rate: 1,100 m³/h

  • Total Head: 47 m

  • Pump Speed: 744 RPM

  • Motor Power: 250 kW (down from 315 kW)

  • Hydraulic Efficiency: 84.2%

  • Construction: Cast Iron body, bronze impellers, stainless steel shaft

  • Monitoring: Integrated vibration sensors for real-time shaft behavior monitoring

  • Total Shaft Length: 8.6 meters

  • Discharge Flange: DN500 at 1.8 meters below ground

  • Drive: Frequency inverter-controlled for variable flow and speed

The pump motor is driven by frequency inverter in order to control and vary the pump speed performing with a variable flow in accordance with the system needs; here following are shown the Foras performance curves according to the speed variation.

By reducing shaft power to 167 kW, the system now operates with a smaller, more efficient 250 kW motor, contributing to significant energy savings. The pump is fully assembled with a drive head, thrust bearing, and vibration monitoring system to ensure reliability and low maintenance.

Results

The new Foras vertical turbine pump has already shown major improvements in system efficiency and environmental performance. With enhanced hydraulic efficiency and reduced power consumption, the upgraded cooling plant is now aligned with Veolia’s sustainability objectives. The installation at Kleefse Waard was successfully completed, with the pump securely fixed on the river platform and fully operational.
