ENEL Teodora Power Station with Foras Vertical Turbine Pumps – High-Capacity Fire-Fighting System with Sea Water Solution

Location: Italy

Year: 2016

Application: The ENEL Turbogas Teodora Power Station

At Foras, we specialize in high-performance pumping systems designed to meet the most demanding industrial applications. One of our notable case studies is the installation of our vertical turbine pumps at the ENEL Teodora Turbogas Power Station, a flagship energy facility in Italy’s national grid.

The ENEL Turbogas Teodora Power Station

The Challenge

This plant has a total power size of 700 MegaWatt

The ENEL Teodora Power Station, located near the Adriatic Sea, is a cutting-edge thermal power plant with a total output capacity of 700 MW. This is achieved through a two-phase turbine system—initial gas turbines followed by steam turbines that recover and reuse waste heat.

Given the size and importance of the facility, it required a highly reliable and high-flow fire-fighting system. The system also needed to operate using seawater sourced directly from a nearby canal, demanding robust material resilience and consistent pressure output.

To meet this challenge, Foras installed vertical turbine pumps specifically designed for high-volume seawater applications. Key features of our solution include:

  • Pump Model: VP16-A/4

  • Flow Rate: 480 m³/h

  • Pressure Head: 60 meters

  • Material: All wetted components made from cast Stainless Steel AISI 316 for corrosion resistance against seawater

  • Power: Maximum absorbed power of 102 kW

  • Hydraulic Configuration: 16” diameter, 4-stage hydraulic stack

The pumps draw directly from the Adriatic Sea via a nearby canal, ensuring immediate and abundant water supply during emergencies.

Results

The Foras fire-fighting pump system was successfully installed and commissioned at the Teodora Porto Corsini site. The installation process included critical phases such as:

  • Assembly of the 16” pump bowl made of casted AISI 316

  • Oil-filling of the thrust bearing chamber

  • On-site hydraulic testing to verify start-up readiness

The system is currently in regular weekly operation, running for a few hours at a time to meet the power station’s stringent safety testing protocols.
